GEOTHERMAL SITES KARLOVAC
Karlovac, Croatia
Gravimetry is a scientific discipline within solid Earth physics that focuses primarily on measuring the acceleration of gravity, i.e., its intensity. Gravimetric surveys are non-invasive and do not initially require any physical excavation or drilling. These surveys involve measuring the Earth’s gravitational acceleration at various locations using specialized instruments called gravimeters.
The exploration area for the conceptual geophysical gravimetric survey is located within the city of Karlovac and the municipality of Draganić, situated in the central part of the Republic of Croatia. The selected area, where geothermal basins are expected, covers a surface of approximately 45 square kilometers.
The main objective of this project is to explore the geothermal potential of the Karlovac area. Geothermal energy is a renewable energy source with significant potential to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and contribute to sustainable development. Gravimetric mapping will enable a detailed analysis of subsurface structures, identification of possible geothermal reservoirs, and assessment of their potential for exploitation.
The survey will focus on identifying anomalies in gravity data that may indicate the presence of thermal sources or subsurface water suitable for geothermal energy extraction.
